Terminology

Key registry terms

matrícula → registration file
The record opened for each entity, to which every entry and annotation is attached.
inscrição / averbamento → entry / annotation
An entry records a registrable fact; an annotation updates or completes an existing entry.
apresentação → filing
The submission of an application, which fixes its priority.
registo por depósito → registration by filing
Registration made by archiving the documents without examination of their content, used for most company acts.
registo provisório / definitivo → provisional / definitive registration
A provisional registration lapses unless converted within the legal period.
conservador → registrar
The official who decides on registration at the registry office.
certidão permanente → permanent online certificate
The online access code that replaces a paper certificate of the registration.
recurso hierárquico / impugnação judicial → administrative appeal / judicial challenge
The two routes against a registrar’s refusal.

How this translation is made and checked

The Portuguese text

The Portuguese column is the consolidated text published in the Diário da República. Every line was then checked against the consolidation kept by the Lisbon Public Prosecution Service and against the amending acts on 26 October 2026. Articles that the official consolidation still prints after their repeal are shown as repealed; misprints and outdated cross-references are explained in a note on the article.

The English text

Each provision is translated separately and aligned with its Portuguese counterpart, then checked by a second translator for time limits, effects of registration, refusal grounds, appeals and cross-references.

What it is not

This is not an official or certified translation and not legal advice. Registry fees are set separately in the Regulamento Emolumentar dos Registos e Notariado.
